If you like modern dance, I can strongly recommend the performance of Companhia de Dança Deborah Colker at the Kennedy Center from October 28 through October 30.
You can find a review in The Washington Post here (before the performance) and a later review here (after the performance). This YouTube Video shows excerpts from Colker’s Rota which her company performed at the Kennedy Center seven years ago. Colker’s company is based in Rio de Janeiro.
Colker’s company is just one of several strong Brazilian dance companies that have visited Washington, DC. The Kennedy Center has also hosted performances from Grupo Corpo, a modern dance company from Belo Horizonte which shows the influence of strong ballet training. My wife and I first encountered Grupo Corpo in 1990 when we were given complimentary box seats at the Teatro Municipal in Rio de Janeiro. Their performance blew us away. At the end of the evening, we found the doors to our box locked and had to climb into the next box to escape. Here is a video excerpt of one of their works, Bach.
A third impressive company that has visited Washington is Quasar Companhia de Dança, which performed some years ago at Dance Place. Quasar is based in Goiânia. The works shown at Dance Place were strongly influenced by capoeira.
