Rio Hamza, an underground river, 4 km. below the Amazon.

A team of Brazilian scientists have reported the discovery of an underground “river,” 6000 km. long and as much as 400 km. wide, flowing very slowly 4 km. beneath the Amazon.  This vast groundwater flow seems to drain the same catchment basin as the Amazon.   Because the flow is slow, it carries only about 3% as much fresh water to the Atlantic Ocean as the Amazon.  See the story at this web page.   For a somewhat more cautious article, see this page.
